Argus is the headquarters of the Burning Legion and the homeland of the draenei, its former inhabitants who were forced into exile upon the Legion's takeover. While once a prosperous planet, it is now a fel-corrupted wasteland ruled by Sargeras and populated with the Burning Legion's infinite army of demons.

During the draenei's inhabiting of the planet, its government was ruled by the noble Draenic triumvirate of Archimonde, Kil'jaeden, and Velen. Approximately 25,000 years ago, the fallen titan, Sargeras, sought the eredar out to add to his army due to their magical affinity and promised the triumvirate unfathomable power in return for them and their people to join the Legion. Archimonde and Kil'jaeden gave in to the titan, but Velen hadn't trusted his offer; thus began the transformation of the eredar people into the demonic man'ari and the rebellious eredar's exile. The rebels, led by Velen, were eventually forced to flee their homeland and disembarked upon the interplanetary ship, the Genedar.

Aeons later, the draenei and the forces of their new, final home, Azeroth, and the Army of the Light, an anti-Legion force fighting them throughout the Great Dark, launched a military assault on Argus when the demon hunter Illidan Stormrage opened a planet-sized portal to Argus from Azeroth by way of the Sargerite Keystone.
