Archmage Arugal is a former mage of Dalaran responsible for the worgen outbreak in Silverpine Forest and Grizzly Hills. Before his ultimate demise, he acted as the primary leader to the Wolfcult, who worshiped the lupine beasts he summoned.

Shadowfang Keep

Hailing from Gilneas, Arugal was a member of the Kirin Tor in Dalaran. However, after the fall of the city by the hands of the Scourge, he fled to Pyrewood Village.

There, against the advice of his peers, he continued the research of his colleague, Ur. Experiments into taboo magics allowed him to summon the vicious Worgen from the Emerald Dream. The feral wolf-men showed no mercy to those that were not their master. Undead and Human alike were not free from their onslaught. Even the esteemed Baron Silverlaine fell victim to Arugal's minions.

Afflicted by his fragmented mind, Arugal treated the worgen as his children and took refuge in the newly deemed Shadowfang Keep. He resided there in solitude, protected by his massive pet, Fenrus. Each day was a haunting venture, for the ghosts of the slain noble family saw fit to wander the halls even after their murder.

It was by the hands of Horde agents that the Archmage was put out of his misery.

After defeat by hands of the Horde, Arugal was buried at the foothold of his acursed keep. By command of the Lich King, the Scourge revived the fallen Archmage and sent him to Grizzly Hills.

Stationed in the fortified Shadowfang Tower, named after his former home, Arugal began to infect the countryside with his worgen curse. First was Solstice Village to fall to its affects. Later was another hunting settlement called Silverbrook. Each joined his Wolfcult and terrorized the rich forests.

However, just as he had been in life, he was defeated by heroes laying seige to his newfound masters in Northrend.
