The County of Greyridge, commonly referred to as Greyridge, is a county located in the mountains west of Lakeshire and northwest of Lake Everstill in the Redridge Mountains. A simple county of farmers, fisherman, foresters, trappers and miners, it is a tight knit community currently ruled by Countess Margaux Grey, after her uncle, Lord William Grey, moved to Pandaria to retire.
History[]
History of William Grey[]
William Grey, was born to Henry and Jamila Grey in Elwynn Forest before the First War. He developed a fondness for the land at a young age, helping his parents with the family farm. As he entered his teens, he took a liking to tinkering, working to create automated plows and harvesters. With the small income from his engineering prowess, he purchased a gyrocopter from Gnomeregan to travel the Eastern Kingdoms, developing an interest in exploration.
Unfortunately, Azeroth was thrust back into war by the time William was becoming an adult, with the young man opting to enlist to do his part for the Kingdom of Stormwind. Enlistment greatly disrupted his life, as he was forced to leave his brand new home, his wife Mary and their two young children, William Jr. and Jessica to serve in the Northrend Campaign.
The horrors of Northrend had an adverse effect on William when he returned. He was detached and withdrawn, unable to cope with such tragedies, horrors and the extreme loss of life he bore witness to. Because of this his marriage quickly fell apart. His wife Mary took the children and moved to Stormwind City, with William wandering east and ending up in Redridge Mountains by winter.
The rough Redridge winter forced the withdrawn William to depend and lean on his new neighbors, helping him begin to work through his grief and trauma. By the spring, he was ready to live his life once more. With the coin from his service, he bought a large and slow cargo ship, the Grey Dawn, and founded the Grey Dawn Shipping Company.
With the success of the Grey Dawn Shipping Company, William Grey was free to seek out other ventures, finally able to explore his interests in exploration. He formed an expedition of archaeologists, called the Artificer's Expedition and spent a year traveling, exploring and artifact hunting. It is through that venture he came into contact with another company, the Quicksilver Company.
While the Grey Dawn was serving as a contracted supply vessel for the Stormwind Navy during the seeking of the lost Anduin Wyrnn, William was present when Pandaria was discovered. Quickly upon landing he filled his vessel with as much Pandaren products as he could, rushing back to Stormwind and selling his ships cargo for enough to purchase a second ship outright. In no time at all, William Grey had merged all of his ventures with the Quicksilver Company and become the owner and leader of the much larger group. His personal assistant, Chlaa Thailor was placed in charge of much of the operations, freeing time up for William.
With his new found wealth and influence, William returned to Western Redridge where he had spent that winter getting his life back in order. His neighbor, Bradlee Baker, had already been made captain of one of the Quicksilver Company’s vessels, and now William was buying up land west of Lakeshire. What began as a private estate started to morph into a small hamlet and then finally a trio of villages that made up the first incarnation of Greyridge.
History of House Grey[]
When the Baron of the area of what is now Greyridge, Willard Bertelemy, died of old age, the lands were given to Lord Jonah Hewett due to a lack of a proper heir. Because Lord Hewett was located in Eastern Redridge, he did not want the small swath of land that is now Greyridge, believing it to be a backwater that was filled with gnolls. Lord Hewett bestowed the area to William Grey, the man with by far the most influence in the area. House Grey was formed, with William Grey naming his niece Margaux Grey as heir.
With the formation came the first two knights. Victor Moretti, a Dalarian man from Gilneas who had worked with William Grey’s brother-in-law, Darius Werthington, became the first man knighted and the Steward of House Grey. He had owed his life to Darius Werthington and when Darius died, Victor moved his oath to Darius’ daughter, the heir of House Grey, Margaux Grey.
Audric Steelmantle, a veteran from Duskwood who William and Margaux met during the Fourth War was hired after the conflict as the Quicksilver Company’s Director of Security. With the formation of House Grey, Audric became the second knight of House Grey, swearing an oath to Margaux Grey.
The Hewett Conflict[]
During a celebratory feast and sparring tournament being hosted by William Grey within Greygates, House Hewett, from Eastern Redridge, blindsided the merrymakers, seeking to pillage and destroy the area. In the surprise attack, Chlaa Thailor was killed after refusing to open the vault within Greyhand Keep, while the Hewett attackers moved from attacking the armed to unarmed civilians.

The flag of House Hewett.
House Hewett had just come through an internal struggle in which Robert Hewett, Lord Jonah Hewett's brother, had seized power by imprisoning Lord Jonah Hewett and placing his son, Carter Hewett, in charge. The young Lord Carter Hewett was influenced by advisors, mostly Robert Hewett, and was convinced that Greyridge was a threat. Dubbed the "The Hewett Holy War for Greyridge" by House Hewett, propaganda against Western Redridge was used to fuel the fighting. House Hewett propaganda pleaded that Silvershire had become home to elves and worgen, while the true reasons for the conflict were mostly monetary and regret for giving land to William Grey previously.
House Grey began to fight back, foiling a few plotted ambushes and eventually pushing House Hewett back east of Lakeshire. Once surrounded, Robert Hewett refused to concede and fought bitterly for every inch of land. Not caring for the immense burdens he placed on the regular citizens in the area, a final assault was launched by House Grey in which they captured Lord Carter Hewett. This ended the conflict, though it would be nearly two years until Robert Hewett was finally tracked down and brought to justice.
Lord Carter Hewett worked tirelessly to make right what had been done wrong. Becoming more mature and wise with age, the young man was determined to lead his House in a better direction, though some may still consider him a traitor, House Hewett and House Grey are on good terms with Lord Carter Hewett in charge.
After serving the Quicksilver Company for some time, a Redridge local, Aladar Dalant, excelled during the Hewett Conflict. Originally a traveling mercenary, he was willing to settle down to make sure his home was a better place. Aladar Dalant became the third knight of House Grey, the first of Redridge blood, swearing himself to service of the land.
The First War for the Defense of Redridge[]
The First War for the Defense of Redridge was just that. Years of the livelihoods of the people of Redridge being frustrated by the Blackrock Orcs had caused a great resentment within the people. Generations had passed and nothing had changed, Stormwind had not sent significant aid, the Orcs still harassed, slaughtered, and pillaged at the fringes of Redridge settlements.
With the war with House Hewett finished, the pride that swelled in the denizens of Greyridge was unrivaled. Thanks to the previous conflict the people of Greyridge were now armed and organized.
First would come the expulsion of the orcs from their lands, hunting parties and camps waving black and white banners scoured all of Redridge, eliminating even the most fringe groups of orcs that remained within their beloved home. Once the majority of orcs had been pushed out, the attention of Greyridge was turned to Blackrock Pass, "The Gates of Hell." Now men and women from all over Redridge answered the call, no longer would they wait for idling kings to fulfill empty promises, no longer would they hide in their homes. It was not the far off soldiers of Stormwind or bands of mercenaries that came to save the day. It was local farmers, fisherman, lumberjacks and hunters, defending their home.
It was at this time when a rhetoric along the lines of "The best defense is a good offense" began to spread amongst the people of Greyridge, and under this thought, one of vengeance and reprisal that they would march into the Burning Steppes. There, orcish warlords were targeted, mostly those that had clansmen that had assaulted Redridge and reaped the rewards of their land in prior years. This war was supported not only by the people of Greyridge and Redridge, but monetarily by William Grey and the Quicksilver Company. The company had investment in mercenary work and many of these mercenaries would fight within the Steppes, and some even learned to call Greyridge home in time. Their march led them all the way to the foot of Dreadmaul Rock, where what orcs remained retreated within the dark halls, leaving the people of Redridge to rejoice and turn home.
They returned home with pride, covered in soot and the blood of those that had pillaged their lands for so long. It was at this time that the people of Greyridge loosely began going by the title "The Protectors of Redridge" though any of those from the county would insist that such efforts were made by all the people of Redridge. Now with wars of rival houses and Orcs alike over, the people of Greyridge readied to settle in for a long peace.

The Formation of the County of Greyridge[]
Following the First War for the Defense of Redridge, the three villages closest to William Grey's holdings decided that House Grey truly was going to do what was best for the area. The townships of Apple Valley, Highcliff and Rustshore would join, having enough area and populace to officially form the County of Greyridge.
Following the formation of the County of Greyridge, Count William Grey, who was now pushing towards sixty, opted to abdicate so that he could retire to Halfhill in Pandaria and operate his shipping company. Margaux Grey, niece of Count William Grey, became the new ruler of the County of Greyridge. William's daughter and sister both had declined a ruling role, letting the popular Margaux become heiress. Living in Greydawn, her focus tends to be less expansive than her uncle's, focusing on internal matters over external and lacking the resources that William Grey's other ventures brought in to the area.
Annabelle Baker, daughter of Bradlee Baker, the man who had helped William Grey during his rough winter and then worked for him as a boat captain, was ordained as a Priestess of the Holy Light in the Apple Valley Chapel. Following further training and the winning of jousts for the County, she became the fourth knight of the County of Greyridge, the second born in Redridge and the first paladin.
The Second War for the Defense of Redridge[]
About half a decade had passed since the "Protectors of Redridge" last marched into the Burning Steppes. Just as the Blackrock Orcs had been pushed back countless times since they'd invaded Redridge, they would come upon their lands again.
The leadership of the County of Greyridge knew this well, and also knew they were significantly weaker. Without the support of William Grey, the Quicksilver Company, and his other business ventures they were not only barely treading water financially, they were significantly weaker in all aspects, except perhaps in faith. Thus the knights of Greyridge set out to make allies for themselves in the months before the conflict would come. They traveled far to speak with old friends of considerable wealth in power, exchanging favors for their assistance in the battles to come.
The first contributor was Lord Nicholas Malvoisson, a Gilnean nobleman. In exchange for helping the settlement of Surwich, Lord Malvoisson would lend his magical abilities as well as bringing three Kirin Tor mages he had known with him.
The second contributor was Lady Maya Wither of Silverwood, a small barony in northern Duskwood that made coin from mining silver and ferrying it down the Nazferiti River. She would not only pledge coin, but also many armaments such as mortars, canons, rifles and ammunition for those of Greyridge.
Greyridge also made allies of Sir Cedrus Abragand of the Silver Hand, and Alberic Sarkhoff, who would lend their blades, and their minds into both fighting in the field and organizing the effort in the Steppes.
The orcs, after their last defeat, had spent their time fighting for resources. Upstart clans as well as skirmishes with the Dark Iron Dwarves kept them busy, though among them a few rose to power. Mogekk the Bloodied was the first, an orcish warlord who was known for his ferocity and unyielding nature, and little for his tact. An ambitious orc, he quickly rose beyond others. Another orc, Khar'mag Fel-tongue, a powerful warlock, coerced Mogekk into thinking that Redridge was unsuspecting, and with the power of his warlocks, they could easily overtake the humans and pillage the mountains once more. Mogekk's ambitious mindset, and Khar'mags want for power, spurred forth the beginnings of another invasion.
The two sides began the scramble to rally forces, the orcs making their forward base upon a rocky outcropping with clear view and height advantage over the Blackrock Pass. Once more the people of Redridge rallied at the "Gates of Hell." Thankfully for the denizens of Redridge, one orc clan in particular, young and fiendish for blood and glory charged forth before their full might had gathered, ultimately a mistake would make the difference of whether the war was fought in Redridge or in the Burning Steppes.
The orcs were repelled, though some, including a warlock, made it beyond the gatekeepers and into the mountains, where they would fester and hide in the coming weeks. The people of Greyridge turned their eyes to the rocky outcropping, particularly the altar and warlocks at its precipice. Any step into the plains of the Steppes was quickly met with raining felfire so long as the warlock's vigil was upheld. The remnants of the clan that attacked too soon were exiled from the rocks the orcs had made their station, finding a new home within the ruins of a human fortification from the First War, set in the southern mountains of the Steppes.
This fortification was soon taken by the denizens of Greyridge, who moved their troops there and stationed Lord Malvoisson and his Kirin Tor mages, to shield the gathering troops from the bombardment of the warlocks just across the field. Through an intense and risky operation involving portals provided by the hopefully licensed mages, the protectors of Greyridge attacked the orcish fortification from within, slaying their magical leadership, including Khar'mag Fel-tongue, who was struck down by Sir Dalant.
Then came the long stretch to Blackrock, skirmishes abound as they grew closer to the mountain. Eventually there was a final stronghold that stood within their path, where the orcs would truly champion the phrase "Lok'tar ogar." As the human invaders readied a siege upon the fortification they heard news that their home was under assault. Quickly those on horseback rushed home to find the warpath leading straight to Greygates. The orcs had managed a foothold within the mountains to attack from thanks to the warlock and others that slipped beyond in the initial fighting. It was during this fight that someone human in appearance, seemingly a Death Knight, commanded the orcs and killed Sir Victor Moretti, the first knight of Greyridge.
Now filled with a vengeance for their lost brother, the knights of Greyridge and those that followed them brought the hammer down upon the orcish fortress, slaughtering them with impunity. Mogekk singlehandedly fighting and halting all the remaining knights, though mortally wounded he would die nonetheless.
With the brunt of orcish forces out of the way the people of Greyridge set out cleansing what groups on the fringes that they could, and cut down the remaining warlocks of Khar'mags coven, as well as slaying the Death Knight that had killed their brother. The orcs repelled once more, the people of Greyridge returned home, though not before establishing The Vigil. The Vigil was created out of the ruin they had made camp in previously, there the most qualified warriors and people of Redridge would take turns, months at a time, staying in the Steppes to monitor orcish activity.
Culture[]
The people of Redridge, mainly of Greyridge, are an easy-going folk. Although their small towns may only rarely bustle with travelers and merchants, they seem content to watch the world pass them by and spend the day fishing or sitting in their stores, discussing the politics of Stormwind and laughing that if the people up there would just relax, their problems would solve themselves. They wear a mixture of fashions, a layered look of tunics and undershirts for the chilly evenings and the warm days. Some tailors have found a sap that waterproofs clothing, leading to waders and boots of such make being popular.
The people of Greyridge are humble and modest, but very proud of what they have. They value family and tradition, passing down names, land and customs. Greyridge citizens normally view things through a "Redridge First" policy. They are almost entirely human and are quite insular, distrusting of most other races.
Bronzebeard Dwarves are particularly despised amongst the populace after the Great Lakeshire Drought & the Great Ironforge Flood of 24 A.D. Dwarven mages in Ironforge accidently created a portal that lacked a liquid filter within Lake Everstill, rapidly draining the lake into Ironforge. Both Redridge and Ironforge suffered damages, with many of the older Redridge populace still resentful towards the dwarves over the incident. Dark Iron Dwarves are often viewed more favorably, as they share a common enemy with the people of Greyridge, the Blackrock Orcs. Kaldorei and Thalassians are often distrusted but will generally be left alone if they are Light fearing and respectful of the area. Elven folk typically only visit during the Midsummer and Midwinter Festivals of the Lake.
Holidays & Traditions[]
The people of Greyridge celebrate many of Azeroth's holidays, but also have many holidays that are their own. Noblegarden, Love is in the Air, Pilgrim's Bounty and Hallow's End are all celebrated as they are in the rest of the Kingdom of Stormwind.
Midwinter Festival of the Lake[]
The Midwinter Festival of the Lake typically takes place during late January during the heart of winter. Lake Everstill is completely frozen and the celebrations center around the frozen lake. Activities include ice fishing and ice skating as recreation and as contests, as well as ice stickball and sledding. A tournament of jousting on the Everstill Bridge and a Tournament of sparring on the frozen lake are both held as entertainment. The festival is famous for its warm spiced wine, a favorite amongst locals and visitors who flock to Redridge to peruse local goods, take part in activities and eat and drink.
Lake Everstill Thaw Festival[]
Celebrated normally around the start of March, the Everstill Thaw Festival recognizes that winter has passed and spring is beginning. Activities typically include a market with ample food and drink and gnolling. The evening is time for large family gatherings and meals in preparation to prepare the coming work in spring, be it farming, foresting, hunting or fishing.
Midsummer Festival of the Lake[]
Celebrated normally in late July, the Midsummer Festival of the Lake is likely the most popular of Greyridge’s holidays to people outside of the county. Started as a celebration to celebrate the spring and summer bounties, as well as the defense of Redridge against the Blackrock Orcs, it typically spans from the end of July to the start of August, the longest of the local holidays.
Activities include fishing, swimming and frolicking around Lake Everstill. Contests for harpooning, fishing, swimming and Everstill Bridge diving also make up a portion of the festivities. A sparring and jousting tournament is held on the Everstill Bridge as well. A market is set up and vendors produce and peddle wares, food and drink. The holiday is known for the ale brewed from lake water and the large bonfires that become a gathering place for storytellers and a place for barbecuing during the day and stargazing during the night.
Bonfires of Autumn[]
Most often held on the first weekend in October, Bonfires of Autumn is an old tradition that centers around gnolling and feasting. Citizens wake up before dawn to head out into the ridges, valleys, hills and forests to partake in gnolling, or the act of culling the gnoll population for sport. Large bonfires are prepared and by the afternoon gnolling parties return and a feast is typically held. The remains of the gnolls are typically burned and the night closes with food, drink and dance around the bonfires.
Everbounty[]
Everbounty falls within the weeks of the Feast of Winter’s Veil, a direct result of many of Greyridge’s denizens harboring a dislike for dwarves. Winter’s Veil is still celebrated, though mostly in Silvershire and not widely anywhere else in the county.
In its place is Everbounty, a gift-giving celebration in which families submerge water-tight barrels, filled with gifts to their children from both the parents and other families, under the ice so that in the morning they can be pulled out. This is done under the guise that Bellyrub, a great goretusk boar in a festive hat, places the gifts underneath the ice for the children who have done good. The children of Greyridge then thank Bellyrub, by passing around a big sewn boar and rubbing its belly. The day being capped out with a night of feasting and merrymaking.

Religion[]

The only religion with any real following in Greyridge is the Church of the Holy Light. Small churches exist in Greygates, Silvershire and Rustshore but the religious hub exists at the Apple Valley Chapel. It is there where the pastor or high priest of the county gives sermon, resides and the Greyridge congregation is based.
The current Apple Valley Clergy:
- High Priest: Mother Annabelle Baker
- Priests: Mother Bree Baker, Father Nathan Caldwell
- Acolytes: Sister Anastasia Deighton
Faith plays a large role in the day to day lives of the people of Greyridge. A religious county, services are well attended and births, marriages, funerals and other occasions are typically overseen by priest. Prayer takes place before school each day, before battles, before meals and before any sporting events or competitions.
Geography[]
Ochre Creek[]
A river in the warmer months, a creek in the colder ones, Ochre Creek is a long river that runs from the northwest of Greyridge down towards the east and eventually into Lake Everstill. The water comes from the Redridge Mountains that tower above it, hence the river is much larger during the melting months. The Ochre Creek name comes from the reddish Redridge dirt mixing with sandy yellow silt to come to an ochre tone.

Lake Everstill[]
The serene Lake Everstill is a large lake located at the heart of the Redridge Mountains. The waters are famously clear and calm and the Everstill Bridge is both renowned with locals and visitors alike, standing as a local symbol. Both the Everstill Bridge and Lake Everstill appear on the County of Greyridge's coat of arms, as well as a pair of gulls.
The lake is primarily sourced from runoff from the Redridge Mountains and Redridge Canyons. It is drained by its eastern river which flows near the dark Stonewatch Keep.
Lake Everstill is highly valued by the people of Redridge as a source of food, income and recreation. Fisherman harvest freshwater fish and eel throughout the year, with ice-fishing people rather popular amongst the locals.
Tialune's Grove[]
Tialune's Grove, commonly referred to as The Grove, is a relatively hidden place of safety. Originally brought up in response to the undead running amok after the sky-breaking in Icecrown (Death's Rising Patch). It now serves as a place of retreat and safety if needed, even if it is no longer is tended by the dryad Tialune. It is a place of respite amongst nature, a lush area of fauna and flora.
Major Settlements[]
Greygates[]

Greygates is the seat of power for House Grey, nestled into the Northwest mountains it is well defended for what it is, holding two keeps, a smithy, a tower, stables, as well as other small means of living. This is where most pressing official matters will be conducted, such as negotiations, briefings, and where most guests of Greyridge would be allowed to bunk in with the soldiery.
At the center of the walled area of the keep stands a tall stone tower. Built by William Grey for the purposes of being an area to display his many artifacts, awards and other valuables in a museum format. Since his departure Margaux Grey uses the tower to display accolades, awards and memorials earned by the people of her county.
Greyhand Keep[]
Greyhand Keep works as the command center of Greygates, if not the whole county. It is a place where the leadership gather to conduct most business. Whether that be martial, business, or domestic matters. It is home to not only the treasury vault and ledgers, but also the dungeon and oubliette, where the adversaries and misbegotten criminals are placed, and for the most heinous the gallows sit outside nestled against the keep's eastern wall. Here one can also find the infirmary and officer's quarters on the lower levels of the keep.
Old Bartelemy Keep[]
The southerly keep of Greygates was built prior to House Grey's arrival, originally the home of Baron Willard Bartelemy. While rather old and not as soundly constructed as its twin, it still stands tall as a symbol of influence and power within Greyridge. The Old Keep hosts the majority of the guardsmen and soldiery on hand, most often referring to the Old Keep simply as "the barracks." It also hosts a meeting room on the upper levels which serves for captains and others of high rank to gather and sort out guard shifts, patrols, and assign other work needed to be done around the keep. The upstairs as well holds a small, secluded chapel, simply a tiny room with a few pews and an altar for the men to visit and pray in silence.
Rustshore[]
Rustshore was the first ever settlement of Greyridge, founded by fisherman and hunters who sought the rather large boars that inhabited the western parts of the mountains. A hub for work and commerce, Rustshore has a very tightly knit community and almost a culture all its own.
Rustshore Cemetary[]
Leaking across Ochre Creek, South Rustshore holds the first cemetery of Greyridge, and the largest one where all those of great honor in the county are buried. Some of the names buried there include Chlaa Thailor, Dolorick D. Dominus, Jeremiah Baker and Sir Victor Moretti.
Silvershire[]
Silvershire is a relatively new town, established within the last decade. It is mostly made up of non-natives of Greyridge, hired in from other areas or newcomers seeking a better home. Many of the families of those that House Grey had hired to serve under them find their home in SIlvershire, while their husbands or wives serve at Greygates or other posts throughout the county.
Minor Settlements[]
Apple Valley[]
Apple Valley is a small community primarily focused around the Chapel, mostly made up of its caretakers and their families. A small, quaint place well known for its apple orchard, in which the children of Greyridge enjoy play and mischief after Sunday School, the orchard also serves to stable some of the best horses in the area.
Apple Valley Chapel[]
The Apple Valley Chapel's denomination is the Church of the Holy Light.
The Chapel itself is a rather charming old building, with capacity for only a few dozen. The old stone building was constructed with beams of holyoak and white stone similar to that of what was used for the Everstill Bridge or Stonewatch Keep's construction, standing out amongst the dark and red stone of other structures.
A small vestibule containing holy water opens to a singular rectangular room. A few old pews line the flanks of a central walkway in the nave, with the pulpit forward comprising of a single step up onto raised platform. Desk and books kept to one side, altar and lectern at the center and doorway to the basement opposite.
The Chapel serves as a meeting place for those opting away from fortified keep or tavern as a gathering point. It is not uncommon to find nans knitting or a host of cats lounging on any given afternoon.
Highcliff[]
Highcliff is a small village primarily made up of miners and is dominated by the Highcliff Mines it includes. One of the oldest settlements in the county second only to Rustshore. Overlooking the forests it mostly functions as a place for the workers to stay and sleep.
Highcliff Mine[]
Nestled in the red dirt of the ridge that Highcliff sits on is the Highcliff mine. In use for decades, it was often active primarily in the winter months when agriculture, forestry and fishing all slowed down.
Facilities include storage buildings, mineral processing buildings and an ore crusher. Rethban and copper ore are primarily extracted from the mine.
Greydawn[]
Greydawn is an all encompassing name for the land west of the Highcliff Mountains and North of Ochre Creek. it is mostly comprised of the more wealthy, more prominent (such as the knights) and of course the farmers that harvest the fruits of the land.
