Eoghain Rutherford, NCB (born May 18th, -3 L.C.) is a former Kul Tiras Marine Corps lieutenant commander and one of the most decorated soldiers of the Kul Tiras Marine Raider Regiment. He is one of the few soldiers to be awarded both the Kul Tiran Medal of Valor and the Navy Cross of Boralus for distinguished service. Upon retiring from service in 31 L.C., he became a ranger and pathfinder, drawing upon his military training to aid the people of his homeland in his own way.

History

Early Life

The son of Kul Tiras Navy captain Donagh Rutherford and Tidesage Maevh Rutherford, Eoghain was born on May 18th, -3 L.C. in the Kul Tiran capital of Boralus. Raised in a disciplined but caring household, he grew up with the values of his homeland being instilled in him, and he developed a fierce pride in Kul Tiras from an early age.

As his father was a man of some station, he was afforded an education at one of the modest primary schools of Boralus, supplemented at home with studies of more practical skills by his father and religious subjects by his mother. He excelled in various studies, notably falconry, weapons training, history, and sailing.

His younger sister, Aoife Rutherford, was born during this period, and he left school before completion to assist his mother, due to his father's long periods of maritime service with the navy. Despite this, his mother continued his education where she could, and he maintained the physical training began by his father.

Military Service

In 12 L.C., Eoghain followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Kul Tiran military, enlisting in the Kul Tiras Marine Corps. After the customary period of initial training, he was given the rank of Mariner and assigned to service aboard the LAS Crosswind as part of the 5th Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. He distinguished himself as an exemplary soldier, quickly rising through the ranks during his early years with the marines, eventually earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 19 L.C. and being named Chief Enlisted Officer of the marine detachment aboard the Crosswind.

When the Third War broke out in 20 L.C. and Kul Tiras once again lent its naval might to its longtime Lordaeron allies, Eoghain was deployed in numerous engagements in both the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, as well as island engagements in the Great Sea. As before, he proved himself above his peers in both duty and valor, earning a commission as a Lieutenant and being given his first command in 9th Company, 5th Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. He became a successful battlefield commander, respected by the men and women in his command for his valiant leadership.

Following the war and the isolation of Kul Tiras from broader Alliance involvement, Eoghain continued his service to his nation, combating pirates and other threats. In 23 L.C., he was recruited into the Kul Tiras Marine Raider Regiment, the elite special operations force of the Marine Corps and given command of Bravo Team. His five marine team soon became one of the regiment's best, deploying all across Kul Tiras and its domains in numerous operations, as well as leading reconnaissance and direct action missions during the Burning Legion's attempted invasion of Azeroth in 28 L.C. and the Northrend campaign in 30 L.C. two years later.

Eoghain retired from the Marine Corps in 31 L.C. at the rank of lieutenant commander, wishing to find a new path in life after so many years of service and experiencing the many horrors of war. He was given a farewell ceremony by his commanders in the Raider Regiment and commended for his dedicated service.

Wanderings

Upon his retirement from the military, Eoghain took to a life of wandering, claiming the many untamed wilds of Kul Tiras as his home. Still holding onto the fierce pride of his homeland instilled in him as a child, he resolved to utilize his skills to assist his people in whatever way necessary, from hunting game for remote villages to combating pirates and monsters. Among the populace, he became known as an independent ranger and pathfinder who stalked the wilds, coming to the aid of those who needed it most.

With the growing unrest and distrust between the ruling houses of Kul Tiras, he began to grow disillusioned in his nation's decision to isolate itself from the Alliance, especially with the disappearance of much of the once-mighty Kul Tiran fleet. He found his skills needed increasingly more in the years following the Cataclysm and the Alliance-Horde War, as the three island lands of Kul Tiras became increasingly insular, despite attempts by House Proudmoore to remain in contact.

Description

Eoghain is a hardy man – towering with a broad and muscular build. His hair is a dark red, kept shoulder-length and often tied behind his ears, with a full beard to match his fiery locks. His hair is a subtle contrast to his tanned skin and slight hint of red in the cheeks, earned from many years spent at sea and living in the open wilderness. He bears a set of scars on the right side of his face, and his eye remains hidden behind an eyepatch. His left is clearly visible, displaying a quiet hazel coloration to the iris.

A marine veteran and experienced pathfinder, he wears armor made of storm silver scalemail over layered brown leathers. The gambeson beneath is dyed hues of green and overtop it all he wears the green and gold tabard of his people, complete with anchor heraldry. Close inspection would reveal symbols etched into the leathers and sewed into the cloth, most of them evoking nautical motifs. His belt holds many of the common implements of his profession – a combat knife, throwing axes, bombs, traps, a hand crossbow, quiver of bolts, and a belt pouch. The only jewelry he seems to wear is an anchor talon around his neck, hung by a leather cord adorned with beads.

He carries a glaive across his back, Kul Tiran in make and well-worn from use. The long wooden haft is wrapped in leather and a green cloth is tied near where the haft meets the blade. The blade is etched with several nautical patterns, and a small anchor counterweight is affixed to the butt of the haft.

Beneath his armor and seldom seen, tattoos decorate his arms and torso. A nautical pattern wraps around his shoulders and upper back, evoking totemic imagery of the sea and rugged wilds of Kul Tiras. His forearms are marked with similar imagery, intertwined with runic lettering. The knuckles of his hands are inked with singular runic symbols, each one different from the last.

Personality

Hardy in body and forthright in spirit, Eoghain is a true example of Kul Tiran blood. His manner is gruff and robust, like many of his kin, but his words and outlook carry a hint of a deeper experience and wisdom. At times, a dry wit will cut through to the surface, as do more than a few of the superstitions common amongst his people. Always, however, does he carry a rugged bearing, and he never shies away from his proud heritage.

He cares deeply not only for his country and its people, but also for all of Azeroth. His determination to defend those who cannot defend themselves is true, and ever does he guard fervently against the many enemies of the world, as he has done since his days in the navy. He will readily throw himself into even the greatest of dangers to protect others and will stand against even the mightiest of foes.
