The Maldraz Forest, also known as the Tainted Forest, is an expanse of the revitalized area in the Tainted Scar, created thanks to the efforts of a worgen druid named Marl Wormthorn. Wormthorn travelled to the Blasted Lands along with a number of Gilneans and founded the port town of Surwich along the coastline.
However, the area wasn't cleansed from the demonic presence in the lands, and soon after the regrowth of the forest was finished it became corrupted, and Wormthorn with it. He continued to reside in the great tree Maldraz, from which the forest takes it's name, surrounded by demons and continued to grow the corrupted forest until his demise.
As of late, the forest has been purged of its corruption due to the joint efforts of the Gilneans of Surwich, the Cenarion Circle, and the Reliquary of Silvermoon. Though the Reliquary's aid to the Gilneans was unintentional, the forest now acts as a minor holy site for those of the Old Ways as the Great Tree Maldraz has been purified. Following the Iron Horde Invasion of Azeroth, the region was left relatively untouched as the Iron Horde focused on the forces of the Alliance and Horde. Due to the intervention of heroes such as the great Archmage Khadgar, the Iron Horde was never able to advance into southern Blasted Lands.
