Captain Oliver Swan is a lawman and mariner. He ranks as a Deputy Marshal under the Crown Marshal of Stormwind Robert Norman. He also maintains a paid position as a Stormwind Naval Intelligence Officer, but these days, he spends most of his time with his boots on dry land.

He has had many successes in bringing in fugitives, specialising in cults and dark wizards, but also known for hunting down gang-leaders and traffickers. It has made him a marked man in the bustling metropoli and ports from Ratchet to Boralus. His latest foray into the dark world of a worm cult led to the tragic death of his wife, Abigail, at the hands of one he counted as a friend. Even so, Swan remains steadfast in his commitment to any case that falls on his desk despite what it costs.

He is the nephew of the late Grand Warlock Valkynere Portsmouth and the inheritor of his private estate, which includes a property in Stormwind City.

Positions[]

Deputy Marshal: Oliver is a Deputy Marshal. His work also crosses over into the Dark Tabards Initiative established under King Varian Wrynn to bring in dark magic fugitives.

Naval Intelligence Officer: He is on the payroll of the navy as a Naval Intelligence Officer. His role is to hunt down those who break naval law, investigate matters of importance to naval intelligence and ensure security at port.

Royal Society of Explorers: Oliver continues his patronage of and participation in expeditions for the Royal Society of Explorers.

Sheriff of Redmile (Formerly): He was the sheriff of Redmile Creek, Redridge, in the service of Lord Robert Norman.

Sheriff of Esservale (Formerly): He had cut his teeth in the criminal world trying to bring in Defias gang members who had rallied under more than one man going by the name, The Collector.

Captain of the Stormwind Royal Navy: Oliver is an officer of the Stormwind Royal Navy. He had served aboard the war galleys as a gunner, overseeing the cannons, before he served as a Lieutenant Commander aboard the HMS Orcbane. Progressing through the ranks over the unending bloody Alliance campaigns, he made his name as Captain of the HMS Everstill at the Battle of Bleak Bay during the Legionfall War. He retains his rank, but his role with the navy has shifted to intelligence.

Notable Cases[]

Oliver has worked many of notable cases during his time in law enforcement.

Madness of Olfeld: The case of the Olfeld, a cargo ship which mysteriously sank in the middle of the ocean. There were no survivors and there was no explanation. The shipping company was sued by the families of the crew, but during the trial, disturbing evidence surfaced. The ship's log revealed that the crew encountered a strange aurora on the horizon. The madness and terror that ensued drove the crew to their demise. The trial was dismissed. The families paid Swan to investigate further in a private capacity. He obliged and uncovered much, but was only able to tell the families very little. All reports of the investigation have been heavily redacted.

Cannibalism at the Seaside Resort: In this case, a series of unexplained disappearances occured at a luxury resort overlooking the ocean. The locals were baffled. When Oliver was called in, he immediately sensed something was not right. During his investigation, he uncovered evidence the resort was built on an ancient burial site. The spirits of the dead had risen when new ground was broken for a new construction at the resort. These vengeful spirits possessed the resort-goers, who cannibalised their loved ones. Swan put an end to the affair with the help of a local priestess and a bag of silver stakes.

The Dark Sea Castle

Castle in the Tides: In this case, Detective Swan was hired to investigate strange occurrences at a remote sea castle, isolated by treacherous tides. As he delved into the castle's dark history, he discovered that its former owner was a notorious occultist who conducted experiments on the castle's servants. The castle was said to be cursed, and Swan soon found himself fighting for his life against the vengeful spirits of the dead servants, who were seeking revenge on the occultist and his followers.

The Black Rose of Durwich: On February 11, at around 3am, The Black Rose - a ship that was lost during the Northrend Campaign - was spotted on the horizon of Durwich. The next day, a girl washed up dead in a shipping crate. After an investigation, the woman believed to be the girl's mother was taken by the ghost ship. After scrying her whereabouts, Swan and his posse made a polar expedition to Northrend. They found the wreckage of The Black Rose there. The ship was alive with hideous dark magic, animated by a connection to a root of the corrupted tree Vordrassil. The investigation is ongoing.

HMS Gunmaiden[]

Captain Swan's ship, the HMS Gunmaiden, is a sleek and sturdy vessel, designed to withstand the treacherous waters of the Northrend seas. It is a hybrid ship, using both steam power and traditional sailing techniques to navigate through the icy waters. The ship's steam-powered engine is located in the lower decks, and is operated by a team of skilled engineers who are responsible for maintaining the machinery and keeping the ship running smoothly.

The ship's steam-powered engine is fuelled by coal, which is stored in large bunkers in the lower decks. The crew must constantly monitor the coal levels and shovel more fuel into the engine as needed. The ship is equipped with a number of advanced technologies, including a steam-powered crane for loading and unloading cargo, and a telegraph system for communicating with other ships and shore stations.

The ship's commander is a seasoned veteran of the seas, who has navigated countless dangerous waters and led his crew through many perilous situations. He is known for his strict but fair leadership style, and is highly respected by his crew.

The Crown Marshals[]

The Crown Marshals are one of the oldest law enforcement groups in the Kingdom of Stormwind, established alongside the earliest knighthoods. The marshals originated in the household of the royal family and emerged as an early form of constabulary.

The marshals’ duties include capturing and bringing in fugitives, protecting magistrates and other important members of the Kingdom, executing warrants, and serving in a variety of other roles to ensure the smooth functioning of the judiciary.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Crown Marshal, who is based in Stormwind Keep. The incumbent Crown Marshal is Lord Robert the Firstblood, who is widely respected for his expertise and effectiveness. The Crown Marshal oversees the operations of all marshals, mainly through oversight of the Provincial Marshals.

Each province of the kingdom has its own Provincial Marshal, who oversees the activities of many Deputy Marshals. The Crown Marshals are flexible and responsive to the needs of the courts. Any magistrate or sheriff can call on a Deputy Marshal for aid, and the marshals are trained to respond quickly and decisively to a wide range of situations. This means that they can play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, no matter where the need arises.

In some cases, the work of the Deputy Marshals requires them to take on particularly dangerous threats. To do this, they often form posses, which are groups of marshals who work together to achieve a particular objective. These posses can be made up of Deputy Marshals from different provinces, each of whom brings their own unique skills and experience to the task at hand.

In some cases, the Deputy Marshals may also need to deputize other individuals to help them achieve their goals. These Special Deputy Marshals are typically ordinary citizens who are temporarily given the authority to enforce the law in a specific situation. They may be called upon to assist with capturing a particularly elusive fugitive, or to help protect a high-profile individual from harm.
