Thrall, birth name Go'el, is the son of Durotan and the founder of the New Horde. He was raised by Lieutenant General Aedelas Blackmoore who found him while he was hunting, and he was trained as a gladiator to fight in the rings at Durnholde Keep.
He escaped Durneholde in search of others of his kind, and found Grom Hellscream and his Warsong Clan. Hellscream became one of his good friends. After staying with the Warsong for a while, he left to find his own clan, the Frostwolves. Although he had to prove himself to them, he came to be accepted in the clan. The acting leader of the clan at the time, the Far Seer Drek'thar, showed him the path of the shaman.
During his time with the Frostwolf Clan, a strange orc came, seeking shelter for a time. The orc was rather secretive, and kept talking about how there was no point in fighting the humans, even insulting the Frostwolves. After challenging the orc to single combat and defeating him, it was revealed he was in fact Orgrim Doomhammer, the former Warchief of the Horde, who was looking for someone to help him free the orcs.
Thrall and Doomhammer had freed many orcs, but when they attacked the camp now known as Hammerfall, they were expected. They freed the orcs, but at the price of Doomhammer's own life. In the last moments of his life, he named Thrall Warchief, passing on his armor and hammer.
Thrall stepped down from his position as Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan and passed the mantle onto the aging Far Seer Drek'thar when he rose to the position of Warchief of the Horde. When the second shattering rocked Azeroth, Thrall stepped down from this position as well, giving it to Garrosh Hellscream, and took up the mantle of World Shaman and allying with the Earthen Ring in order to prevent the aspect of death, Deathwing, from destroying the world.
Recognized as one of, if not the, most powerful shaman in the world, Thrall has recently returned to the Horde in order to right the perceived wrongs done by Garrosh in his absence. He ultimately resumed his rule over the orcish clans and the nation of Durotar after the Siege of Orgrimmar, giving the mantle of the Warchief to the Darkspear chieftain, Vol'jin.
